| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (method: real-life news hook) |
Teacher: “Good morning, class! Look at this headline: ‘Kazakh student’s AI start-up wins global innovation prize.’ (show slide). Imagine you have to speak about this for 2 minutes in an IELTS exam. What would you say? First, predict: will the speaking task be formal or informal? Why? Let’s discuss in pairs for 1 minute.” Teacher circulates, elicits 2-3 predictions. “Now let’s watch a 30-sec news clip (or read a short text). After that, we’ll brainstorm key vocabulary for innovation.” Teacher writes on board: “groundbreaking, prototype, funding, impact, collaborate” |
- Students read/listen to the news hook. - In pairs, predict style (formal/informal) and share. - Suggest 1-2 words related to innovation. - Write down new vocabulary. |
Descriptors (no points): • Participates in prediction with a clear reason. • Offers at least one relevant vocabulary word. • Shows interest and curiosity. |
- Slide with news headline + image (AI start-up). - Short video (30 sec) or text about young innovator. - Whiteboard/ markers. 🤖 AI tool: ChatGPT to generate a short news text / or use DALL·E for image. Padlet for brainstorming (optional). |
