Teacher says: “Good morning, everyone! Let’s start with a quick riddle. I will describe a situation, and you guess the communication style. Ready?” Riddle: “You are at a formal dinner with your future boss. You want to ask if you can take a photo of the dessert. Do you say: a) ‘Hey, mind if I snap a pic of that cheesecake?’ or b) ‘Excuse me, would you mind if I take a photograph of the dessert?’ Which style is formal, which is informal? Why would you choose one over the other?” Teacher prompts hypotheses: “Write your guess on a mini-whiteboard or paper — formal or informal? (10 sec). Now share with your partner. Who can explain the reason?” Possible student answers: “b is formal because of ‘excuse me’, ‘would you mind’.” “a is informal – ‘hey’, ‘snap a pic’.” Teacher connects: “Great! Today we practise exactly that: choosing the right register for IELTS Speaking part 1 – general information about yourself. We will also focus on being fair and responsible when we listen to others.” |
