Reading Text: Nanotechnology and Nanobots
Nanotechnology is the science of manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular scale. "Nano" means one billionth. For example, a nanometer is one billionth of a meter. At this incredibly small scale, materials can show new and surprising properties. This technology has the potential to revolutionize medicine, electronics, energy production, and many other fields.
A particularly fascinating application is the development of nanobots, or nanorobots. These are microscopic machines designed to perform specific tasks at the nanoscale. In medicine, scientists imagine nanobots that could travel inside the human body to deliver drugs directly to cancer cells, clean clogged arteries, or repair damaged tissue from within. Unlike traditional surgery, this could be done with minimal invasion. Some concepts even include nanobots that can self-replicate or work together in swarms. However, the creation of fully functional nanobots is still largely in the research phase, facing challenges like power supply, control, and safety.
While the future of nanotechnology is bright, it also raises important ethical questions about safety, privacy, and the environmental impact of nanomaterials.
Task 1: Comprehension Check (Understanding the Main Ideas)
Based on the text, answer the following questions in your own words.
- What does the prefix "nano-" mean? Give an example from the text.
- Name two potential fields that could be revolutionized by nanotechnology.
- What is the main purpose of medical nanobots, according to the text?
- Why is the development of functional nanobots still challenging? Mention one reason.
