| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Rapid Challenge: "Eco-Term Blitz") |
Teacher: "Good morning! Today we're detectives of meaning. You have 3 minutes. On the board are 5 sentences with one bolded word each. They are all related to our planet's health. In pairs, discuss and write on your mini-whiteboards what you think each bolded word means based ONLY on the sentence around it. Ready? Timer starts... now!" Sentences on board/slide: 1. The shrinking of the Aral Sea is a major ecological disaster. 2. Factories must not dump chemical waste into rivers. 3. Planting trees can help prevent land degradation. 4. We need to find renewable sources of energy like wind and sun. 5. The extinction of the Caspian tiger was a great loss. After timer: "Time's up! Let's hear your ideas. Don't worry about being perfectly correct—we're deducing meaning!" |
Students work in pairs, reading sentences and discussing the likely meaning of the bolded terms. They write their deduced definitions on whiteboards. Volunteers share their reasoning (e.g., "We think 'shrinking' means getting smaller because it's about a sea that was bigger before."). | Formative, observational. Teacher circulates, noting which pairs are successfully using contextual clues (synonyms, cause-effect, examples). Descriptor: The student participates in discussion and attempts to deduce word meaning from the given sentence context. |
Interactive whiteboard or projector with challenge slide. Mini-whiteboards, markers, erasers. Timer (online or physical). AI Tool: A word cloud generator (e.g., Mentimeter) used live to collect all the students' deduced definitions for "degradation," showing the most common interpretations. |
