Lesson opening (5 min)
Engagement (Mind map & discussion)
Teacher: "Good morning! Today's topic is hidden in these pictures." (Shows slides of a panda, tiger, and polar bear). "Please take 1 minute to write down all words you associate with these animals and their situation in the world. Ready? Go!" (Starts timer). After 1 min: "Time's up. Look at your list. I want you to choose the three most interesting or powerful words. Now, turn to your neighbor and explain why you chose those three words. You have 2 minutes for discussion." (Monitors pairs). "Who would like to share one word and their reason with the whole class?" (Listens to 2-3 students, writes key words like "rare," "danger," "protect" on board). Students individually create a mind map or word list based on the visual prompt. They then select three key words and discuss their choices with a partner. Volunteers share their words and reasoning with the class. Provide a printed template with a central circle labeled "Endangered Animals" and 3-4 pre-written starter words (e.g., "animal," "forest," "few"). Allow the use of a bilingual dictionary or a word bank on their desk. Descriptors:
  • Generates at least 5 relevant associations.
  • Articulates a reason for choosing at least one word.
  • Actively listens to a partner.
No points.
Projector/Screen, PPT slides with images of endangered animals. Timer. Whiteboard/markers. Prepared mind map template for SEN students.
AI Tool Suggestion: Use an AI image generator (e.g., DALL-E, Midjourney) to create unique, engaging visuals of endangered animals in their habitats to spark curiosity and discussion.
