Lesson opening (5 min)
Engagement (Real-life news hook & prediction)
Teacher: "Good morning, class! I want to show you a short news headline from a wildlife magazine." (Shows slide/board). "Mysterious 'Fire Fox' of the Himalayas Faces New Threat: Climate Change Shrinking Its Bamboo Forest Home." "Look at this picture next to it. This is the animal they call the 'Fire Fox'. What is its real name? Let's brainstorm. What do you think this article might be about? What 'new threat' could it be? Discuss with your elbow partner for 1 minute and make a prediction."

Script: "So, what do you think, Aliya?" (Listens to response). "Interesting prediction about habitat loss. And you, Daniyar?" (Listens). "Good, you connected 'climate change' from the headline. Let's see if our guesses are correct as we read today about this amazing creature – the red panda."
Students observe the headline and picture. They discuss predictions with a partner. Volunteers share their ideas with the class (e.g., "It's about an animal losing its home," "It's about the red panda and weather changes"). Provide the headline with key words (mysterious, threat, climate change) visually highlighted. Offer a sentence stem for prediction: "I think the article is about ______ because ______." Pair SEN student with a supportive peer. Descriptors: The student participates in discussion, makes a logical prediction based on the visual/headline.
Note: No points for this stage.
Projector/board with news headline and image of a red panda. AI Tool: Canva or AI news aggregator (e.g., Bing News) to find/create a compelling, level-appropriate news hook with visual support.
