| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement (Timed Brainstorm Challenge) |
Teacher: "Good morning! Today's topic is about entertainment. I'm starting a 2-minute timer. Your challenge is to brainstorm as many words or phrases as you can related to 'going to the cinema'. Think about everything: the building, the screen, the snacks, the experience. You have 2 minutes. Ready? Go!" (Starts timer, writes "CINEMA" in the center of the board). After timer: "Time's up! Let's hear your ideas." (Writes student answers on the board in a mind map). "Excellent! Look at all these ideas. Now, I want you to look at this list and think: which of these things do you think were the same 50 or 100 years ago? Which are new? We'll find out in our reading today." | Students individually brainstorm words and phrases. When time is up, they volunteer answers (e.g., "popcorn," "big screen," "3D glasses," "ticket," "silent film," "usher," "intermission"). They observe the mind map and consider the teacher's final question. |
Descriptors: The student contributes at least one relevant word/phrase to the class brainstorm. The student shows active listening and engagement with the topic. Note: No points. |
Whiteboard/Interactive board, markers, online timer (e.g., Classroomscreen.com), AI tool: ChatGPT to generate a quick example list of cinema-related vocabulary for teacher reference if needed. |
