Engagement (Mind map & discussion)
Greeting & Lead-in: "Good morning, everyone! Today's topic is 'How to stand out from the crowd'. Let's start with a quick mind map. In 60 seconds, write down or shout out any words, feelings, or images that come to your mind when you hear 'standing out'. Ready? Go!" (Teacher writes key words on the board). "Time's up. Let's look at our map. I'll pick three words: 'confidence', 'risk', and 'loneliness'. Who can explain the connection of one of these to our topic? For example, why might 'loneliness' appear here?" Students actively call out associations (e.g., unique, different, brave, weird, leader, fashion). Students volunteer to explain the teacher's chosen connections. Possible responses: "Confidence is needed to be different," "Taking a risk to be unique," "Standing out can sometimes make you feel isolated." Provide a printed word bank with visual cues (icons next to words like 'unique', 'different'). Allow verbal responses instead of written. Teacher repeats and positively reinforces contributions. Descriptors: The student contributes at least one relevant association to the mind map or participates in the discussion by sharing an opinion. (no points) Whiteboard/markers, timer. AI Tool: Mentimeter or AnswerGarden for real-time collaborative word cloud creation. This visualizes all ideas instantly, engaging visual learners and making the mind map dynamic.
