The Expanding Universe: Mysteries and Discoveries

For centuries, humans have gazed at the night sky and wondered about the nature of the Universe. Today, we know that the Universe is not static; it is expanding. This discovery, made by Edwin Hubble in the 1920s, revolutionized astronomy. Hubble observed that distant galaxies are moving away from us, and the farther they are, the faster they recede. This relationship is now known as Hubble’s Law. The expansion of the Universe implies that it was once much smaller and hotter – a state we call the Big Bang. The Big Bang theory, supported by evidence such as cosmic microwave background radiation and the abundance of light elements, is the prevailing cosmological model.

However, many mysteries remain. One of the most puzzling is dark energy. In the late 1990s, astronomers discovered that the expansion of the Universe is actually accelerating, not slowing down as expected. This acceleration is attributed to a mysterious force called dark energy, which makes up about 68% of the Universe. Another enigma is dark matter, an invisible substance that does not emit light but exerts gravitational pull. Dark matter accounts for about 27% of the Universe. Ordinary matter – stars, planets, gas, dust – makes up only 5%.

Recent discoveries continue to challenge our understanding. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), launched in 2021, has captured images of galaxies that formed just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. These galaxies appear more massive and mature than expected, forcing scientists to rethink early galaxy formation. Additionally, the study of exoplanets has revealed thousands of worlds beyond our solar system, some of which may be habitable. The search for life elsewhere in the Universe remains one of the most exciting frontiers of modern science.

In conclusion, the Universe is a dynamic, ever-changing expanse full of wonders. While we have made remarkable progress in understanding its past and present, many questions about its future and composition remain open. Every new discovery brings us closer to a fuller picture of the cosmos and our place within it.

  1. ___________________________________________________________________________
  2. ___________________________________________________________________________
  3. ___________________________________________________________________________

Часть текста для дополнительного чтения (укажи номера строк или краткое описание): ___________________________________________________________
