Text: Inheritance: Past and Present
Inheritance is the process by which property, titles, debts, and rights are passed from one generation to the next. In many societies, the eldest son was traditionally the sole heir to the family estate. This system, known as primogeniture, ensured that land and power remained undivided. However, it often excluded daughters and younger sons from any bequest.
In Kazakhstan, the 2026 Constitution guarantees equality before the law. This means that all children—regardless of gender or birth order—have an equal right to inherit property. A person can also write a will to specify how their legacy should be distributed. This reflects the constitutional values of equality, rule of law, and social justice.
In contrast, in the United Kingdom, the rules of succession for the throne were changed in 2013 to allow the eldest child (whether male or female) to become monarch. However, for ordinary property, a person can still choose their heir freely through a will. Some titles and estates are still passed down through hereditary systems.
In many cultures, inheritance is not just about money or land—it also includes cultural legacy, knowledge, and traditions. Understanding inheritance helps us see how societies value fairness and continuity.
