Lesson opening (5 min)
Engagement (method: provocative question + quick vote)

Teacher says: "Look at the screen. You see four amazing buildings: the Burj Khalifa (Dubai), the wooden church of Kizhi (Russia), the Khan Shatyr (Nur-Sultan), and the Sydney Opera House. Which one do you think was the most difficult to build? Raise your hand for A, B, C or D."

Teacher projects four images with labels A–D. After voting, ask 2–3 students to justify their choice briefly. Debrief: "Every culture creates unique structures that tell a story. Today we explore how buildings express ideas about society, rights and identity."

Transition: "In pairs, discuss for 30 seconds: what does the Khan Shatyr tell visitors about Kazakhstan?" (accept any reasonable answer)

  • Students look at images and vote by raising hand (A/B/C/D).
  • 2–3 volunteers give a one-sentence reason for their choice.
  • In pairs (7 pairs, one student works with teacher in mini‑group if odd), discuss the meaning of Khan Shatyr. Share one idea with the class.
Descriptors (no points):
  • Student participates in vote and gives a brief reason.
  • Student contributes at least one relevant idea in pair discussion.
Projector, slides with four images (Burj Khalifa, Kizhi church, Khan Shatyr, Sydney Opera House). Timer (30 s).
