| Lesson opening (5 min) Engagement ("What if...?") |
Teacher: "Good morning, class! Today we're stepping into Victorian London. I have a question for you: What if you were completely alone in a big city, with no family and no money? What would you do to survive? Think for a moment. Now, turn to your partner and share your ideas. You have one minute."
After pair discussion, the teacher asks 2-3 pairs to share their partner's idea with the class. The teacher listens and links to the lesson: "Interesting ideas. Today, we will meet a boy who faced exactly this situation. His name is Oliver Twist." |
Students think individually, then discuss the "What if...?" question in pairs. They listen to peers and make connections to the upcoming topic. | For students with attention/processing difficulties: Provide the question in written form on a card. Use a visual timer for the discussion. Pair the student with a supportive peer. The teacher can approach the pair and rephrase the question simply: "Alone, no money. What do you do first?" | Formative: Observation of pair discussion. Descriptor: The student contributes at least one idea to the pair discussion. | Timer, prompt card for SEN. |
