Hello!
Today we are learning about the different sounds of the past tense ending -ed. Remember, the way we pronounce -ed depends on the final sound of the base verb. Read the short explanation below and complete the three tasks. Good luck!
Quick Rule:
The past tense ending -ed can be pronounced in three ways:
- /ɪd/ (extra syllable) – after verbs ending in the sounds /t/ or /d/ (e.g., wanted /ˈwɒntɪd/, needed /ˈniːdɪd/).
- /t/ (voiceless) – after verbs ending in other voiceless sounds: /p/, /k/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/, /ʧ/ (e.g., stopped /stɒpt/, liked /laɪkt/).
- /d/ (voiced) – after verbs ending in other voiced sounds and vowels (e.g., played /pleɪd/, cleaned /kliːnd/).
Task 1. Categorize the Verbs (3 points)
Listen to your teacher pronounce the past tense verbs from the box. Write each verb in the correct column of the table according to the pronunciation of its -ed ending: /t/, /d/, or /ɪd/.
