Martina's Marine Biology Blog — Post 14: "The Silent Ocean"
Hi everyone! This week I want to talk about something that is often hidden from us. The world's oceans are being polluted every single day, and most of this pollution is never seen by people on the shore.
Last month, my team was invited to the Caspian Sea to study the local dolphin population. When we arrived, we were shocked. Plastic bags and fishing nets were found floating near the coast, and two dolphins had already been caught in them. These animals are often injured by something called "bycatch" — this happens when sea creatures are accidentally caught by fishing boats.
The Caspian seal is also affected. Its habitat is being destroyed by oil drilling and industrial waste. Scientists say that if nothing is done, the number of seals will drop by half in the next twenty years.
But there is good news! Last year, a new conservation programme was started by local volunteers. Beaches are cleaned every weekend, and new rules are being introduced to limit overfishing. Schools are also invited to join the "Taza Qazaqstan" initiative, where students learn how water bodies can be protected.
So, what can you do? First, plastic bags should never be thrown into rivers or lakes. Second, sustainable products must be chosen when you go shopping. Third, your voice can be used to tell others about this problem. The ocean is not a rubbish bin — it is our home too.
Stay curious,
