The Global Journey of Coffee
Coffee is one of the world's most popular beverages, but its journey from bean to cup is complex and global. It begins on coffee farms, primarily located in the "Coffee Belt" around the equator. Countries like Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, and Ethiopia are major producers. The beans are actually seeds inside red or purple fruits called coffee cherries. After harvesting, the beans are processed, dried, and sorted.

Next, the green coffee beans are shipped worldwide to roasters. Roasting is a crucial step that develops the beans' flavour, aroma, and colour. Light roasts are more acidic and retain more of the bean's original character, while dark roasts are less acidic and have a stronger, bitter flavour. After roasting, the beans are ground and then brewed using various methods like espresso machines, French presses, or drip coffee makers.

The culture of coffee drinking varies greatly. In Italy, people often drink a small, strong espresso standing at a bar. In Turkey, coffee is prepared in a special pot called a cezve and served with the grounds. Meanwhile, in many Western countries, "to-go" coffee in large cups is a common morning ritual. Despite the differences, coffee shops everywhere serve as social hubs for meeting friends or working.

However, the coffee industry faces challenges. Climate change threatens coffee-growing regions with unpredictable weather. Furthermore, ensuring fair prices for farmers (fair trade) is an ongoing issue to promote sustainable farming practices. Understanding this journey helps us appreciate the effort in every cup.
