Task 1. Reading (11.4.9)
Read the text below about the future of fashion. There are five inconsistencies (logical contradictions or unsupported claims) in the argument. Identify them and explain why they are inconsistent with the main argument or with common knowledge.
The future of fashion is zero-waste, but it will be difficult to achieve. Many designers believe that the only way to reduce waste is to use only recycled polyester, which is a very durable material. However, recycled polyester is made from plastic bottles, which are themselves a non-renewable resource. This means that using recycled polyester is actually worse for the environment than using natural fibres like cotton, because cotton is biodegradable. Furthermore, the process of recycling polyester requires less energy than growing cotton. This is why most experts agree that the fashion industry should completely abandon the use of natural fibres. Finally, it is important to remember that consumers are the main problem, not the producers. Therefore, the best solution is to make clothes that are designed to be worn only once, so that people will buy more and the economy will grow.
