Task 1. Hypothesis and Proposal Discussion (3 points)
Situation: You and your classmate are researching the history of timekeeping for a project. You have different ideas about which ancient device was most crucial for the development of modern science.
Student A (Your role): You believe the Antikythera mechanism (an ancient Greek analog computer) was the most crucial because it could predict astronomical positions.
Student B (Your partner's role - write a response): Your partner believes the water clock (clepsydra) used in ancient China and Egypt was more crucial because it was widely accessible and used for daily time management.
Your task:
1. Write your initial hypothesis advocating for the Antikythera mechanism (1-2 sentences).
2. Write a response to your partner's proposal about the water clock. Evaluate their proposal. Do you agree or disagree? Give one reason. (2-3 sentences).
Use phrases for making and evaluating hypotheses (e.g., "I hypothesize that...", "Your proposal is valid, however...", "An alternative view might be...").
