Task 1. Hypothesis and Proposal Discussion (LO 11.3.5.1) [3 points]
Instructions: Work with a partner. Read the following scenario and discuss the questions. One student should take the role of Speaker A, the other – Speaker B. Be prepared to present your conclusions to the class.
Scenario: A major tech company is developing a revolutionary new public timekeeping device for city centers. It must be highly accurate, visually impressive, and serve a social function beyond just telling time. Two proposals are on the table:
- Proposal Alpha: A giant, transparent digital sundial that uses smart glass and GPS to calculate and display solar time, local time, and historical time data for the location.
- Proposal Beta: A monumental water clock (clepsydra) combined with a digital waterfall that collects rainwater, measures time through water flow, and displays real-time environmental data (air quality, temperature) on its water surface.
Discuss and make notes:
- Make a hypothesis about the main technical challenge for each proposal.
- Evaluate the alternative proposals. Which one is more viable for a modern city? Give at least two reasons for your choice and one reason against the alternative.
- Propose one modification or additional feature to improve the proposal you did not choose.
