Nauryz – a celebration of independence and spring
Nauryz is one of the oldest holidays in Central Asia. In Kazakhstan, it marks the beginning of a new year and the arrival of spring. Families gather to cook nauryz kozhe – a special soup made from seven ingredients, symbolising seven virtues. People visit each other, forgive old quarrels and wish prosperity. Since Kazakhstan became independent, Nauryz has also become a symbol of national unity and pride. The holiday reminds us that independence gives us the right to celebrate our own traditions, not someone else’s. When we set the dastarkhan (festive table) and say ‘Nauryz quttı bolsın!’, we are not only welcoming spring – we are showing respect for our ancestors and our sovereign state.
