Instructions for the student:
You will hear a recording twice. It is a discussion between two students, Tom and Aisha, about whether school uniforms should be mandatory. Listen carefully and complete the tasks below.
Text for the Teacher (to be read aloud or played as a recording):
"Tom: I really think schools should require uniforms. For one, it creates a sense of equality. Students from different financial backgrounds wear the same clothes, so there's less pressure to have expensive brands.
Aisha: I see your point about equality, but I disagree. Uniforms limit our personal expression. Teenagers use clothing to show their personality and creativity. Taking that away can be harmful.
Tom: But school is primarily for learning, not for fashion shows. Uniforms reduce distractions. Also, they are practical. You don't waste time every morning deciding what to wear.
Aisha: That's a practical advantage, I admit. However, uniforms can be expensive to buy initially, which is a problem for some families. And what about comfort? The uniforms at our school are quite uncomfortable compared to my own clothes.
Tom: That's a fair criticism about comfort and cost. Maybe schools should design better, more affordable uniforms. But the main argument for me is still about reducing social differences and improving focus.
Aisha: I believe we can teach equality and focus without forcing everyone to look the same. Encouraging respect for differences is more important, in my opinion."
