Learning Objective: 10.2.1 Understand the main points in unsupported extended talk.
Time: 10 minutes.
Instructions: You will hear a talk about "The Future of Remote Work" twice. Listen carefully and complete the tasks below.
Script for the Teacher/Recording:
"Good afternoon. Today's topic is the evolution of remote work and its projected future. Initially a necessity during global events, remote work has transitioned into a preferred model for many companies and employees. Key drivers for its permanence include technological advancements, such as cloud computing and collaborative platforms, which have made seamless communication possible across continents. Another significant point is the change in employee expectations; many now prioritize flexibility and work-life balance over traditional office perks. However, challenges persist. 'Proximity bias' – the idea that those physically present in an office are more likely to be promoted – remains a concern. Furthermore, maintaining company culture and fostering spontaneous collaboration in a fully remote setting is difficult. Experts predict a hybrid model will dominate, blending office days with remote flexibility. This model aims to capture the benefits of both worlds: innovation from in-person interaction and productivity from focused work at home."
Tasks:
- According to the speaker, what are TWO key drivers making remote work permanent? (2 marks)
- What is 'proximity bias' as mentioned in the talk? (1 mark)
- What is the main challenge for company culture in a remote setting? (1 mark)
- What future work model do experts predict will dominate? (2 marks)
