The Maori Haka
The Haka is a traditional war dance of the Maori people of New Zealand. It is a powerful performance involving rhythmic movements, stamping feet, loud chanting, and facial expressions like showing the whites of the eyes and sticking out the tongue. While historically performed by warriors before battle to intimidate opponents, today the Haka is used for various occasions: to welcome distinguished guests, at weddings, funerals, and, most famously, by New Zealand's national rugby team, the All Blacks, before their matches. It is a living tradition that expresses community, strength, and cultural identity.
a) What was the original purpose of the Haka?
b) Name two modern occasions when the Haka is performed.
