The Earth faces many environmental problems today. Some of the most serious are air pollution, water pollution, deforestation, climate change, and the loss of biodiversity. Air pollution occurs when harmful gases and particles enter the atmosphere. These substances can come from cars, factories, and burning fossil fuels. Water pollution happens when chemicals, plastic, and waste enter rivers, lakes, and seas. This pollution makes the water unsafe for people, animals, and plants. Deforestation — the cutting down of forests — reduces habitat for many animals and increases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Climate change is the result of high levels of greenhouse gases. These gases trap heat and make the planet warmer. As a result, we see more extreme weather, melting ice, and rising sea levels. Biodiversity means the variety of life on Earth. When species disappear because of pollution or habitat loss, ecosystems become weaker. Plastic waste is also a big problem. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down, and it often ends up in oceans where it harms marine animals. Many environmental problems are connected: for example, deforestation can increase carbon dioxide and contribute to climate change, which then changes habitats and affects biodiversity. There are many actions people can take to help the environment. Recycling, using less plastic, planting trees, saving energy, and supporting clean energy sources — such as wind and solar power — all help. Small changes in daily life, like using reusable bags and saving water, can make a real difference when many people act together.
