Task 1: Reading for Specific Information (3 points)
Read the short text below about earthquakes. Then, answer the questions. Write your answers in full sentences.
Earthquakes: The Shaking Ground
An earthquake is a sudden, rapid shaking of the Earth's surface. It is caused by the movement of tectonic plates deep underground. The point where the earthquake starts is called the focus. The point directly above it on the surface is the epicenter. Earthquakes can cause buildings to collapse, trigger landslides, and sometimes create giant sea waves called tsunamis. Scientists use a tool called a seismograph to measure the strength of an earthquake on the Richter scale.
- What causes an earthquake?
- What is the name of the tool scientists use to measure earthquakes?
- What is the difference between the 'focus' and the 'epicenter'?
