Quick Guide: Superlative Adjectives
We use superlative adjectives to compare three or more people, places, or things. We say which one is the "most" or "least" of something.
How to form them:
- Short adjectives (1-2 syllables): Add -est (fast -> the fastest). If the adjective ends in -y, change -y to -i and add -est (happy -> the happiest). If it ends in a vowel+consonant, double the consonant and add -est (big -> the biggest).
- Long adjectives (2+ syllables, usually): Use the most or the least before the adjective (beautiful -> the most beautiful).
- Irregular adjectives: Learn them by heart! (good -> the best, bad -> the worst, far -> the farthest/the furthest).
Remember: We almost always use 'the' before a superlative adjective.
