📄 Reading text: Welsh National Costume – a symbol of identity
The traditional Welsh costume is one of the most recognisable national dresses in the United Kingdom. Its iconic elements – a tall black hat, a red woollen shawl, a striped flannel skirt, and a white apron – emerged in the early 19th century. However, the outfit was not originally designed for daily wear; it was popularised by Augusta Hall, who wanted to preserve Welsh culture during a time when English influence was growing.
During the 19th century, the costume became a symbol of national pride and resistance. Welsh women wore it at cultural festivals (eisteddfodau) and on St David’s Day to show loyalty to their heritage. The tall hat, sometimes called a “chimney” hat, was especially distinctive and represented the independence of the Welsh people. Even today, the costume is worn by children and adults on national holidays, reminding everyone of the country’s unique identity.
Just like the Kazakh shapan (traditional robe) or the saukele (bridal headdress), the Welsh costume carries deep cultural meaning. Both nations use clothing to express independence, unity, and patriotism. While the materials and shapes differ, the purpose is the same: to keep history alive and to show that a nation’s spirit cannot be erased.
