Text: London — a city of traditions and pride
London, the capital of the United Kingdom, is a city where centuries of history meet modern life. Many of its landmarks are symbols of national pride and independence. The Tower of London, built in the 11th century, has served as a royal palace, a prison, and a treasury. Today it houses the Crown Jewels, which represent the British monarchy and its continuity. Big Ben (the Elizabeth Tower) is another iconic symbol — its chimes have marked important national events for over 160 years. Westminster Abbey has been the site of coronations since 1066, including the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The Houses of Parliament (the Palace of Westminster) are where laws are made, reflecting the country’s democratic traditions. Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the monarch and a symbol of the British state.
London also celebrates its independence and diversity through events like the State Opening of Parliament and the Trooping the Colour parade. The London Eye, a modern landmark, shows how the city embraces innovation while respecting its past. Just as Kazakhstan values its independence and national symbols (the flag, the anthem, Baiterek), London’s sites remind people of the UK’s long history of self-governance and cultural identity. By studying London, we can better understand and appreciate our own national values.
